The Urban Journey course addresses movement as a tool for observation, interpretation, and knowledge production about the city. From the earliest territorial representations and travelogues of Antiquity to the travel journals, diaries, and architectural records of modernity, the experience of movement has been a privileged way of understanding and describing the built environment. In this context, the course reviews a series of theoretical and methodological frameworks that have explored the relationship between walking, observing, and representing urban space. These include Guy Debord’s theory of the dérive and psychogeography, developed by the Situationists; the work of Terunobu Fujimori and Takeyoshi Hori’s Architectural Detective Agency, which uses walking as a method of urban research; and Bernard Tschumi’s explorations in The Manhattan Transcripts, where architecture is understood through the events and actions that occur in space. and the journeys promoted by the School of Architecture and Design of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, which conceive of travel as a practice of discovery, reflection, and collective construction of the territory. This background constitutes the conceptual framework from which the four journeys undertaken during the semester were developed.
